PLANTED: Stories From Manitoba's Natural World
What made Nadia Monaco follow a trail of king bolete mushrooms until she got lost in Manitoba’s Interlake? How did Lindsey Emberley find healing in nature after her infant daughter passed away? How does Dave Daniels know exactly where to look and what plants to harvest for his traditional medicines?
Planted is a reminder of the personal and ecological benefits of protecting nature in Manitoba. In the style of narrative non-fiction, I share the stories of eight people who are inspired by nature and have stories to tell because of it. You’ll hear stories of survival, self-discovery, and tradition, with a focus on species native to Manitoba.
These stories show we are all connected — our hands, feet, and bodies touch the Earth every day. This planet, and this province, is worth exploring and protecting.
This second edition of Planted includes a new preface, updates to stories throughout, and new illustrations by my sister Rayna Meakin. Proceeds from each book will go toward humanitarian aid in Ukraine. So far, I have donated a total of $5,187 to Ukrainian Patriot, the Cobblestone Freeway Foundation, Lifeline Ukraine, Come Back Alive, Educational Cultural and Art Center Aelita, and Second Front Ukraine Foundation. The next place Planted proceeds will go to is Murashky. I post updates about the places I donate to on my blog.
